Published between 1907- 1909, the ‘Gem’ was a story paper (aimed at young boys). Similar in tone, content & appearance to other Edwardian (& early 20th) boys papers, ‘Gem’ mainly contained stories set in St Jim's a fictional public school, with Tom Merry being its most famous pupil. Charles Hamilton (pen name- Martin Clifford) was one of ‘Gem's’ chief writers. Hamilton was also responsible for the creation of another fictional public school boy- Billy Bunter.
