This month, the literary spotlight falls on Frances (Fanny) Burney , 1752- 1840, and her famous ‘novel of manners’, Cecilia. Alternatively knows as Memoirs of an Heiress, this satire on polite London society, offers a fascinating insight into the era from a female perspective.
Originally published in 1782, this smartly presented 8th edition (1802), comprises five volumes bound in the publisher’s original boards, contains evidence of prior ownership, and is in very good overall condition fot its age.
Burney wrote four novels, and was also a playwright and diarist, but her contribution to late 18th century literature, though largely neglected in her lifetime, is assured due to her connection to Jane Austen (1775- 1817), who literary scholars agree was a ‘fan’ of Burney, and appropriated the phrase ‘Pride and Prejudice’, for her more famous novel of the same name, published in 1813.
