This month, the literary spotlight is on, German-born novelist, Erich Maria Remarque (1898-1970) and Australian author, Helen Zenna Smith (real name, Evadne Price, 1888-1985).
The highlighted books are: ‘All Quiet On The Western Front’ & ‘The Road Back’, Remarque's seminal anti-war novels, published in 1929 & 1930 (respectively), which re-counted the horrors of the Great War (1914-18), from the German perspective (& the author's own experience), and ‘Not So Quiet…Step Daughters Of War ‘, Helen Zenna Smith. The latter, is an influential feminist anti-war text, which presented a female perspective of the 1914-18 conflict.
All three books are regarded as classic anti-war literature, and the copies highlighted, include two first editions (Remarque) and a 1930s imprint of Smith's book (originally published in 1930).
